Do you need one of the architects in Barcelona? If you are buying or renovating, you need an architect whenever the work goes beyond cosmetics. Moving or removing a wall, opening a window, joining two flats or adding a terrace are all major works, and in Barcelona major works need a technical project signed by a qualified professional and a municipal works licence. We would confirm the category of your works on the Ajuntament's procedure page before signing any contract.
A concrete case: a foreign buyer falls for a 1930s flat in Eixample with a dark corridor and a closed kitchen. Opening the kitchen to the living room is a layout change, so the first call goes to an architect, not a builder. The architect checks the building (load-bearing walls, community rules), prepares the project and handles the licence. A builder then prices the works against that project, which makes quotes comparable.
Not every job needs one. Painting, new flooring and a bathroom refit in the same place are usually minor works, and a reliable reform company can do them. If you are unsure, a short consultation with an architect before you commit is cheaper than a licence refused halfway through a renovation.
Before you buy, an architect or technical architect can inspect the flat and tell you what the renovation would involve and whether the layout you want is feasible. That is more useful than a seller's estimate. If you are choosing between an old flat and a new development, the inspection also tells you what the old flat hides.
When you sell or rent, two documents come back to the architect's desk. The first is the habitability certificate (cèdula d'habitabilitat). The Generalitat states it is needed to sell, rent or transfer the use of a dwelling, and to register utilities, and that for existing homes the owner first obtains a certificate from an architect or technical architect, who can file the application. Read the official cèdula page for the current validity and process.
The second is the energy certificate. Royal Decree 390/2021 requires the energy label in every sale or rental advertisement and sets a maximum validity of 10 years, or 5 years for a G rating, per the text on the BOE. If you are preparing a flat for the market, do the paperwork before the photos, then look at home staging. The same file will be asked for by your real estate agent and by the notary.
Who signs what? The word "architect" covers different jobs on the same site. This is how we read the roles, and why a good renovation team often has two or three of them.

A technical architect is not a lesser option. For a building inspection, a certificate or supervising a reform, it is often the right one. Among the businesses on this page, Arquitectos Técnicos describes itself as a technical architecture practice active since 2005 that signs building inspections (ITE), which is the kind of profile you would want for that side of the job.
Choose on four things: registration, scope, reviews that describe the work, and a written scope. These are the questions we would ask in the first meeting.
Also check what the Google profile really says. We only keep businesses whose main Google category is architect, surveyor or engineer, but that still mixes studios that sign building projects with interior architects and rendering or drafting studios. Those can be good at what they do, but they will not sign your licence. We rank them as Google reports them and explain the method on How we rank; you should read the categories on each profile.

Ask for the fee as a written breakdown by stage, and ask how many site visits are included. Two quotes that look different are often covering different stages.
Red flags we would not ignore:
